When I open the door for her the following day, I have to work hard to keep my jaw from dropping. She looks amazing in her ChowNow uniform, but she’s standing in front of me wearing a black sweater that looks incredibly soft, a pair of skinny jeans, and Doc Martens. Her hair is down, the red color striking against the black of her sweater. And she’s wearing glasses.

Cute women with glasses are my kryptonite. I can hardly speak.

“Hey,” she says shyly.

“Hey,” I say, trying to recover. “Come on in.”

“Thanks so much for letting me read your manuscript, Dean,” she says, favoring me with a huge smile. “I still can’t believe that I get to read it before everyone else.”

“You’re doing me a favor,” I respond. “Have you eaten? I can order lunch.”

“Are you two-timing me with some other delivery service?” she asks with mock outrage. “Mr. Donovan, the audacity.”

“I have other plans for you,” I respond, and wow, does that ever come out creepier than I intend it to. Charlie just stares at me for a moment with big eyes as I try to smooth over my stupidity. “I mean, I’m sure you’d like to finish reading so you’re not spending all your free time here.”

Her mouth quirks down a little bit, and I sense that I’ve said the wrong thing. “Of course,” she says. “I should get out of your hair as quickly as possible.”

“No, I didn’t mean it like that!” I say. “Look, can we start over? I’m Dean and sometimes dumb things come out of my mouth.”

She smiles then, and I feel ridiculously relieved to see her happy again. “I’m Charlie, and I believe you have a book for me to read?”

“Come on,” I tell her. “How’s pizza sound?”

“Really good, actually.”

“Ok. You read and I’ll order pizza.”

Three hours later, the pizza has been eaten and Charlie’s still engrossed in the book. I’m pretending to write, but really I’m watching her. She gets a little wrinkle between her eyebrows when she’s concentrating hard, and it’s utterly adorable. There’s no way I’m going to get any work done. So when she stands up to walk over to my computer table, I have to scramble to get something on my screen that makes it look like I’ve actually been doing something other than watching her. Finally, I give up and just stand up to meet her.

She’s really excited, so much so she’s almost bouncing on the balls of her feet. “It’s so good!” she says, throwing her arms around my neck. “You’re amazing!”

I know that she’s just high on reading a book that she really enjoyed, but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I pick her up and twirl her around, and she squeaks adorably at me. When I set her back on her feet, our mouths are quite a bit closer to one another than they were before. And I cannot resist closing the distance between us and pressing my lips against hers.

I pause for a moment, giving her plenty of time and space to back up if she wants to.
